5 Things To Know When Scheduling A Propane Delivery

Posted on

If you've recently purchased a home that used propane for fuel, you may be wondering how to schedule delivery. Scheduling your first propane delivery doesn't have to be stressful, especially if you know what to expect.

1. Tank Fill Location

If this is your first time scheduling a tank fill, make sure you know the location of the tank or its fill tube so you can properly direct the delivery service to the location. This is especially necessary for winter tank fills when the access point may be covered in snow or ice. You should have the area cleared and the fill port easily accessible before the delivery driver arrives.

2. Gauge Reading

Propane tanks should have a gauge that allows you to read the amount of fuel left inside. Your delivery service may request this reading when you order propane so that they can be sure that the driver has enough fuel on board for your needs. These gauges can fail sometimes. In this case, you need to let your service know the gauge may be faulty. Some services will replace the gauge for you for a fee.

3. Condition Concerns

It's a good idea to survey the condition of the tank before scheduling your delivery. Make sure there is no visible rust, dents, or bulging anywhere on the tank. The fill and pressure relief valve needs to be intact and working properly, as well. If you notice any issues, then you may need to schedule tank servicing or replacement before you can schedule a fuel delivery.

4. Delivery Times

An initial delivery or a delivery that includes tank servicing may require that you are present in order to show the driver to the tank location or to oversee repairs. Propane deliveries are usually scheduled in windows of several hours, as opposed to being scheduled at a specific time, so make sure you are available at that time if your presence is required. Subsequent deliveries don't always require your presence as long as payment arrangements have been made.

5. Billing Requirements

Propane delivery services may offer different billing options. Some will take payment in advance via credit card or bank draft, while others will leave a bill on the door and allow you to pay within a certain time frame. Keep in mind that drivers may not accept any form of payment, or they may only take credit cards or check payments (no cash). Payment plans may also be available upon inquiry.
